The Lyman's Life.

We drove up the coast to see the elephant seals. 

And this is how it goes:

They laze about in the sun, kicking sand on themselves to stay cool, until one of the males gets up and tries something with one of the females. Then all the males get up & chase that one down. Until the biggest, burliest, nastiest male of all gets up and rumbles toward the scene & everyone backs off. This big guy gets the female in the end of it all. Except then, he's so tired out from his rumbling across the beach, that he collapses in the sand & goes to sleep. Nothing much comes of it all. 

And that's how they spend their day, apparently.
