I will begin this story with the same girl, married for about a year, who happens to notice she is missing something that comes every month. Why did it not come this month, just as it has every month since she was the magical age of teenager? Well, she supposed she better buy a stick and pee on it. Isn't that how it's done, after all? And then...waiting for the fateful moment...heart racing...wait for it....ahhhh! there it is....a thin, faint line to match the other bolder one.
It's positive.
It was the day we celebrate Mother's and this girl was driving home from her grandmother's in the back seat of her parents car with her own mom. Despite her excitement, she doesn't feel so good. Kinda queasy, light headed. She whispers quietly, so her dad and brother in the front seat wouldn't hear above the radio, to her mom what the stick read. But, are those things ever really accurate, she asks.
Mom just smiles. Yes, those sticks are pretty accurate.
The next few months consist of barfing her guts up in every toilet all over Cal Poly as this young girl tried to just finish her Spring quarter at school. Then feeling better in the fall and taking 29 units to finish her degree, and walking in the graduation ceremony 8 months pregnant. As the due date approaches, they discover that the baby is laying cradled in the womb, not positioned properly for coming out at all. They all go to the hospital to have it turned right side up, or upside down really.
Then they wait.
The baby didn't want to come. The baby missed its due date by 10 days, making the girl rather uncomfortable. They went to the hospital to induce labor on a Thursday evening, and this baby didn't come until 11:20 on Friday night, 29 hours later.
A fun time, indeed. Especially for the girl.
So after feeling like she was going to die, this young girl pushed one last time...and was handed a baby boy.
He was perfect and small and hardly even cried. He looked up into his mommy's eyes and told her how hard it had been for him too. They concurred it was a hard 29 hours for all involved. The girl's mom was crying happily, and the boy was calling his mom and dad to announce the birth, and the baby's auntie was peeking from around the curtain to see the baby.
It was four years ago that this happened.
As you can see, January 21st is a special day in our household.
