This is our resident monkey balloon that hangs out in our house wherever he chooses:
In our bedroom, lurking in the hall, in corners of dark rooms. He can really freak you out when its late and you are headed to bed and you happen to glance down the hall and he's staring right at you. Or when you wake up in the middle of the night and you see a tall dark figure across the room. Creepy. But then, you just remember it's monkey balloon and you settle yourself right down.
At James' class Valentine's party at pre-school, one of the mothers gave every child a big cellophane balloon to take home. It was really nice, and Jamie was super into it. But, we had the car door open too long and it slipped out and flew away as fast as it could. You should have seen the freak out that ensued from James!! He threw himself on the ground and cried and just about died and it was almost laughable but I really did feel badly for him because I knew he really liked that balloon. So I told him we'd pop by the dollar store and get him another one. But, it never happened. For the entire week leading up to V-day he would ask if we could please go get another balloon. And every time I'd put him off for some reason or another.
So finally, on actual Valentine's day which was a Sunday, we were driving home from church and Jamie softly asked about his balloon. Ahh! I kind of thought he'd forgotten and had not made it a priority and I felt terrible! So I told Adam he had to pull in to the dollar store and he needed to march in there and get two Valentine's day balloons, one for Anna and one for James, and that was just the way it was. Adam, being the good boy that he is, fussed about it being Sunday and how we shouldn't break the Sabbath for something so trivial and James could just live without it. But, I insisted. Judge if you will, but I knew it meant a great deal to James and in that split second I felt sure that this is what needed to happen. So I told him what he needed to do, where they were, and how to do it. And Adam walked in and came out not five minutes later boasting two big pretty balloons, one with a monkey and one with a girly red and pink heart.
The glee that filled that car!
James was so excited to see the monkey balloon! We watched Adam approach with anticipation in our breaths, he opened the car door and just as he was handing James his balloon, it POPPED!
In thin air, for no apparent reason.
Without skipping a beat, Adam marched right back and got him another one.
And Monkey Balloon has been a part of this household since then. He has not deflated with time like a balloon should. He just hangs about with us all day. And that is why I call him our resident monkey balloon.
