See Girls Run.

In my church, the girls between ages 8-11 get together like twice a month and have activities where they learn important life skills, make a craft, or goof-off (which is what ends up happening anyway... girls will be girls, you know). The group is called Achievement Day Girls, and I am one of the leaders.

Last week, we took the girls to Avila Valley Barn to go on a hayride out to the pumpkin patch, play in the maze, check out the farm animals, and have cookies and ice-cream. We told the girls we'd buy them either a pumpkin or an ice-cream cone, and all the girls except one chose ice-cream! I thought it was interesting.

These tween-age girls are super hilarious... there is no telling what they will do or come up with. Going crazy on the hayride, hanging off the edge trying to impale themselves and asking the cute cowboy driving the tractor all sorts of questions. Dashing off the hayride and scouring the field for the largest pumpkin in the patch. Rushing through the corn maze at least a dozen times, coming out with cheeks flushed, hay sticking out of their hair.

One of the girls shares a name with me and is crazy about babies, which also reminds me of myself. She bounded over immediately to a girl in the group's mommy and asked if she could hold her baby. She was excited when the mommy strapped the baby carrier onto her, and placed the baby in it. He nestled in, resting his head on her chest. Oh the thrill! Her delight was evident in her shining eyes and smiling face. A mommy in the making.

So much of what they do brings me right back to when I was that age, and acted just the same. Goggling over cute boys, getting to hold babies, running wild with friends, and sucking bubble gum flavored ice-cream out the bottom of my sugar cone.

I hope they remember these happy, carefree times. All too soon they will have to worry about Prom dates, driving tests, social pressures, SAT and ACT scores, and working. All that is fun too, but it taints you a little.

The world is never as sunshiny and carefree as when you are a little girl.

Sounds like you had a fun time with the youth! Activities are such a good time!
